Natchitoches sits in a hot-humid climate zone, and the combination of long, brutal summers and high year-round humidity puts more pressure on a home's insulation than most parts of the country. Most of the residential housing stock dates from the mid-20th century or earlier. Wood-frame construction is the norm, and pier-and-beam foundations are common in older neighborhoods.
